GRC 2015
The second annual LV Girls Rock Camp was AWESOME! Twenty-two girls, ages 10-17, spent the week with us at Liberty High School in Bethlehem, PA. They learned how to play an instrument, formed a band, wrote an original song together and then performed at a *real concert*– all in just six days. Wow!!! The girls also attended workshops based on this year’s theme: BE YOUR OWN SUPERHERO!
The first day of camp, Monday July 13th, featured a songwriting workshop led by Jacqui Pratt, a discussion about the importance of speaking up for yourself led by Yvonne Haddock and a performance from Legion of Womb. The next day, Jen Alpha talked to the girls about feminism, Meeka Matlack helped the girls paint a portrait of their inner superhero and Tigr Hors performed for us. On Wednesday, each band designed their own logo with Caitlin Schultheis of Hot Mess Design, had official photos taken by Erin Gallagher of Stars & Moon Photography, attended a discussion about body positivity led by Jaime K. and saw Lobo Marino perform. The fourth day featured a discussion about creative self-care led by Chelsea Kirtley, a screen printing workshop where the girls got to create band merch with materials donated by Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations and a performance from Becca Maye. Friday was bittersweet. The girls attended a workshop about DIY shirt reconstruction led by Eleni Burd, watched Moonstruck (our founders!) play and then obtained *superhero status* after final preparations for the showcase. Throughout the week were other fun activities including a scream circle, countless dance parties, the reading of The Radical Self Love Manifesto and SO MUCH MORE!
The program concluded with our showcase on Saturday July 18th at Diamond Theatre with six bands each playing their original song in front of their family, friends and future fans. The show was wonderful!!! We couldn’t be more proud.
We would like to thank all of our wonderful sponsors, our amazing volunteers (many took off an entire week of work to be with us) and the inspiring girls who attended camp. You make this possible! And for that, we are so grateful. <3!
