LRC 2016

The second annual LV Ladies Rock Camp was FANTASTIC! Sixteen women, 18 and older, spent the weekend with us at Circle of Seasons in Fogelsville, PA. They learned how to play an instrument, formed a band, wrote an original song together AND played a show– all in less than forty-eight hours.

The first day of camp, Friday April 15th, was awesome. After some fun introductions to camp and to each other, Kelsi led a workshop blending songwriting and aspects of GarageBand, a home recording program. The campers went to their first instrument lesson, attended an amazing poetry workshop led by Wisteria and then had their first band meeting to talk about their favorite music genres, possible song subjects and ideas for their band name. Fun! Saturday was totally bonkers. After just two instrument lessons, the campers went to their first band practice. (!!!) They also attended four workshops! Topics included band logo design with Victoria, herbalism with Ann and Shannon, Toolkit for Understanding White Privilege with Karot and Invincible Voices: Tips for Assertion, Resilience and Self-Care with Jaime K. Jaime cooked for us too! It was delicious. 🙂 The last day of camp was bittersweet. Campers shared highlights from the weekend so far, attended a self-defense workshop, printed their own merchandise and practicedpracticedpracticed. After the awards ceremony, we packed up and got ready for the showcase!

Our program concluded with a *real* show on Sunday April 17th at The Alternative Gallery. It was amazing!!! The campers had such a great time. Seeing the crowd cheer wildly for people who had learned how to play their instruments just two days before was incredible. It was sad to see such an awesome, life-changing weekend come to an end, but we are grateful for the lasting friendships that were made and for our friend Billy who recorded each performance.
